Complex Molecules and Coordination Chemistry
'Coordination Chemistry' is an area of chemistry focusing on 'Complex Molecules'. 'Complex Molecules' are compounds including one or some metal ions with another ions or molecules combined. The ions and molecules bound to the metal ions are called 'Ligands'. There are about 70 metal elements on the earth, and you can design and synthesize various types of ligands. Therefore, lots of novel and useful functions can be given to 'Complex Molecules'.
Have you ever heard the words 'chlorophyll' or 'hemoglobin'? These complex molecules have evolved and supported our lives on the earth for billions of years.
In our lab, we are studying 'Coordination Chemistry' dealing with 'Molecular Complex Catalysts' that afford various useful compounds, and with 'Functional Complex Molecules' that exchange the forms of energy.
Research
Our scientific interests are focused on coordination and organometallic chemistry of transition metal elements. The current research projects are as follows.
- Synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of luminescent transition metal complex and its application to device and energy conversion.
- Studies on the reactivity and functionality of polynuclear transition metal complexes on the unusual oxidation states.
- Syntheses of new low-valent ruthenium complexes and their reactivity studies.
- Coordination chemistry in self-assembled capsules
